Sullivan County is located in southern New York. It is separated by the Delaware River from Pennsylvania, it's within a 75 mile radius of New York City and it's within the Catskill Mountains. Sullivan County has a total area of approximately 997 square miles of which 97% is land and 3 % water. As of the census of 2000, there were 73,966 people, 27,661 households, and 18,311 families residing in the Sullivan County, New York. Out of New York's 58 counties, Sullivan County ranks as 32nd most populous. The county's name is in honor of Major General John Sullivan.
